Making money from rap — rates, royalties and selling beats

Rap can earn money, but rarely where beginners expect it. Streaming plays are usually the smallest part of revenue; more comes from concerts, beat sales, merch and production gigs. In this section we explain what the money really looks like and how to count it.

Before you count profit, count costs: mixing, mastering, distribution, cover art, a video and possibly a beat license. Only the difference shows whether releasing a single makes financial sense or is an investment in reach.

If you make beats, selling instrumentals is the fastest route to your first money from music. You can list them in our store and set your own license terms.

    Frequently asked questions

How much does Spotify pay per 1,000 plays?

Typically around $2.50–$4 per 1,000 plays, depending on the listener's country and subscription type. The distributor takes its commission from that.

Do I have to join a performing rights organization?

You don't have to, but without it you won't collect royalties for public performance of your tracks, for example on radio or in venues.

What's the difference between leasing a beat and exclusivity?

A lease is the right to use a beat under set terms — the producer can sell it on. Exclusivity means the beat is removed from the offer and stays with you alone.

How much does releasing a single cost?

A minimum of roughly $100: a beat or your own production, mixing and mastering, cover art and distribution. With a video the amount rises to a few hundred.
