How our rhyme finder works

A classic rhyme dictionary compares the last letters of a word. In English that falls apart quickly: “though”, “flow” and “know” rhyme but are spelled completely differently, while “cough”, “though” and “through” look alike and sound nothing alike. We go further: every word is stored with its pronunciation, and we look for matches from the last stressed vowel. That is why “nation” rhymes with “station” and “information”, not just with words that end in “-ation”.

Exact rhymes

The same last stressed vowel and the same sounds after it: flow – go, cat – hat. They sound strong and clear, but used too often they become predictable.

Near rhymes (assonances)

The vowel sound matches, the consonants may differ: game – rain, money – journey. This is the foundation of modern rap — it lets you rhyme almost any words and keep the meaning of the line.

How to use the dictionary while writing

  • Write the line you want to say first — only then look for a rhyme for its last word.
  • Pick 3–5 words that fit your topic and add them to the notepad (the “+” button).
  • Go for multi-syllable words — a longer rhyme sounds more interesting than a single syllable.
  • Test the rhyme on a beat: play a free beat and read the line out loud in tempo.

Once your verse is ready, record it and add your track to ShowRap, or read our guides for rappers and producers.

Rhymes: frequently asked questions

Where do the words in the rhyme dictionary come from?

The dictionary is built on CMUdict, the open Carnegie Mellon pronouncing dictionary, with about 125,000 English words, ranked by how common each word is in movie and TV subtitles. Rhymes are matched by sound, not spelling: from the last stressed vowel to the end of the word.

What is the difference between exact rhymes and near rhymes?

An exact rhyme has the same last stressed vowel and the same sounds after it (flow – go, station – nation). A near rhyme (assonance or slant rhyme) keeps the vowel but the ending is only similar (game – rain, where “m” and “n” are both nasal sounds). In rap, near rhymes sound natural and are used far more often than perfect rhymes.

Is a rhyme dictionary enough to write a good verse?

No. The dictionary suggests endings, but meaning, imagery and flow make the verse. Pick 3–5 words that fit your topic, drop them into the notepad and build your lines around them.

Can I write my lyrics directly on the page?

Yes. Under the search box you will find the lyricist notepad: write your verse line by line, see the syllable count next to every line, and get rhyme suggestions for the last word of the active line. Click a rhyme to insert it. Your text is saved automatically in your browser.

Is the tool free?

Yes, the ShowRap rhyme dictionary is completely free and does not require an account.
